"Games make venture capitalists nervous --
these are people who wear ties and suits," says
Stewart Alsop in an article published in Red
Herring ("The Hatfields and the McCoys,"
September 1996). But game companies are
multiplying like USA Presidential Election
Campaign '96 scandals. If VCs are shy, twitch
game software manufacturers sure don't know
it. The Internet Frenzy has rejuvenated them.
Electronic Arts founded a new game division
called Ultima Online to release non-twitch
games especially tuned to the high latency of
WWW. 3DO is repositioning itself as an online
game company, as are a number of large
companies that have more money than common
sense: TCI's AND INTERACTIVE, AOL's
recently acquired ImagiNation Networks, and the
usual suspects, MPath Interactive and TEN. Even
Microsoft is sniffing around the online game
market with partner GT Interactive.
What does all of this commotion mean? Is Wired
World about to embark on yet another feeding
frenzy of activity? Could this be bigger than
the NC (Network Computer) hype?
