day 2

microsoft duels with netscape 2

Microsoft is fighting a rear guard action.

Hampered by its size, ignorance, and sheer

weight of customers, the megalith of Redmond

is struggling to even register a bleep on the

Internet radar screen. In an effort to gain

some kind of initiative, M'soft initiated an

alliance with DirecTV to bring high speed

Internet access to the couch potatoes of

America. The problem is that DirecTV is

asymmetric - meaning it downloads at high

speed, but uploads via a dialup at much slower

speeds. This is simply too complicated for

Americans who can't even set the clock on their

VCR. Someone needs to tell Bill Gates that the

cable modem is the next big thing, not DirecTV.

Poor Bill; he is puffing just to comprehend the

Telecom Bill of 1996.
