day 37

beach blanket babylon 4: joke, joke, no-joke, joke

Larry King came up to bat, and started with the

most honest statement of the lot, "I did not

prepare anything - I never prepare for

speeches." It showed.

King had nothing at all to contribute. He did

good jokes, however. For example, he told about

the good old days when he was hired to emcee a

charity sponsored by the mob in Miami. Ha, ha.

What about the time he went to Miami to lecture

on Merchant Marines. Ha, ha. What is his

fascination with Miami? Do aimless jokes go

over easier in Miami?

Things got worse when movie star Richard

Dreyfuss took the audience down with the

question, "Where is quality, energy, purpose and

community?" Reading from a prepared manuscript--

after all, he is just an actor-- Dreyfuss

exceeded his 30 minutes, put everyone to sleep,

and nearly killed the rock concert. Aiming his

left-leaning rhetoric squarely at the

well-heeled SV moneymen, he tried to prod them

into charity, but it didn't work.

These two guests single-handedly made the third

major point of the concert: a country that seeks

wisdom from its entertainers will be

entertained, not enlightened.
