twitch 6: snack attacks
Yesterday we learned that everybody is Fig. 5. I-Man makes one thing clear: We don't need no stinkin' PCs
watching television.
The money is in TV. The question is, how can we
get it out of the hands of Hollywood, and into
the hands of Siliwood? How can we transition
the PC industry into the TV industry? What is
needed is a device that is as cheap as a video
game box, but as powerful as a PC. I'm not
talking about TV snacks!
Of course PC multimedia companies have known
this all along. That is why they keep trying to get
GIF, JPEG, MPEG, and now MPEG3 down in
price. But they make the mistake of assuming
that the Wintel PC is going to be something
everyone will bring home to dinner. I don't
think so.
Now, the vid-game empire has seen the gold
at the end of the Internet rainbow. Naturally,
they think the $200 price point of their
devices will win the day. If only they could
get their boxes to work over the Internet. This
explains why Mpath is using PSINet, an Internet
Service Provider, to complete calls. They want
to merge with the Internet but keep their
installed base of consumers. I don't think they
can do it, either.
In short, consumers don't want no stinkin' PCs
in their living rooms. What they want is TV.
What they want to buy became available on
September 18. What is it? Internet TV.
